Government Initiates Measures to Counter Fraudulent Activities via Mobile Networks

In a proactive initiative, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced measures to address the proliferation of fraudulent activities conducted through mobile networks.

The DoT has initiated the blocking of handsets and suspension of mobile numbers implicated in fraudulent schemes, particularly those involving deceptive text messages. Utilizing the newly established Chakshu portal, introduced earlier this year, the telecom regulatory body aims to identify and mitigate instances of telecom-related fraud.

Recent reports highlight the efficacy of the Chakshu portal in identifying fraudulent entities. The DoT has disclosed that 52 entities have been blacklisted for their involvement in phishing activities via mobile platforms. Furthermore, the portal has facilitated the blocking of 348 mobile handsets and flagged 10,834 suspicious mobile numbers for re-verification, resulting in the disconnection of 8,272 mobile connections. Notably, affected users are promptly notified of the disconnection, with associated mobile handsets being blocked to prevent further misuse in cybercrime or financial fraud.

To combat the rising tide of fake calls and dubious SMS messages, users are encouraged to report suspicious numbers to the Chakshu portal. The seamless process for reporting fraudulent communications ensures swift intervention by relevant authorities.

For individuals encountering fraudulent communications, the following steps are recommended to file a complaint via the Chakshu portal:

1. Visit the Sanchar Saathi website at
2. Navigate to "Citizen Centric Services" and select "Chakshu - Report Suspected Fraud Communication."
3. Proceed with authentication by entering your mobile number or email address and verifying the received OTP.
4. Specify the type of communication (call, SMS, or WhatsApp) and provide details such as sender/caller number, date, time, and a description of the incident.
5. Optionally, include a screenshot of the fraudulent message or call.
6. Complete the submission by clicking on the "Submit" button.

By promptly reporting suspicious activities through the Chakshu portal, individuals contribute to the collective effort in combating mobile and online scams. Timely intervention enables swift governmental action to identify and apprehend fraudsters, thereby safeguarding the interests of citizens and promoting digital security.
